Course Overview
This course introduces participants to the creative possibilities
of Generative AI in visual media, showcasing how AI can be used to
ideate, visualize, and simulate stories across pre-production,
production, and post-production workflows.
Building on key topics from the earlier “Basic Course in AI in
Visual Media,” this extended edition broadens the scope to include
image, video, and audio generation using leading AI tools. It
offers participants the opportunity to explore these tools through
assignments and demonstrations, provided they choose to subscribe
to certain recommended software. While some content may overlap
with the previous course, this is intended to ensure continuity
for past participants and provide a comprehensive foundation for
new learners, enabling them to join without having completed the
basic course.
Participants are encouraged to subscribe—individually or in
groups—to select AI tools during the course to gain a more
effective, hands-on understanding of their functionality
(estimated cost: approximately 25–30% of the course fee). However,
this is entirely optional. Those who choose not to subscribe will
still benefit from the course through instructor-led
demonstrations, live walkthroughs, and case studies.
The course is designed to inspire creative exploration and build
awareness of how AI is influencing visual storytelling practices.
While it introduces possibilities for AI to support or enhance
traditional techniques, it maintains a neutral stance on whether
these technologies ultimately advance or diminish the creative
process. Participants are encouraged to form their own
perspectives on this evolving subject based on the demonstrations,
discussions, and their individual engagement with the tools.
- Introduction to Generative AI in Visual Media;
- Overview of AI Tools and Platforms;
- Script Ideation and Visual Concepts with AI;
- Prompt Engineering for Visual Consistency;
- AI-Based Image Generation for Storytelling;
- Storyboarding and Shot Visualization with AI;
- Text-to-Video Tools: Capabilities and Use Cases;
- Generative Sound, Voice, and Music for Media;
- AI in Editing and Post-Production Workflows; Ethics,
- Copyright, and Responsible AI Use;
- Case Studies of AI in Contemporary Media Projects; Creating a Short Scene or Visual Sequence with AI Tools (optional);
- Critiquing AI Outputs: Aesthetic and Narrative Evaluation; and a Group Demo or Instructor-led Walkthrough of a Sample Narrative Created Using AI Tools.
[Important Note: Participants may need to work individually or in groups outside regular course hours to create a demo using AI tools (subscription required). The Course Director will suggest a few recommended tools on the first day; participants are also encouraged to explore alternatives with similar functionalities. To accommodate expert sessions, the 6:00–7:00 PM slot on weekdays may be used, depending on availability of the expert. The Course Director will make every effort to complete the course within the planned schedule. However, in the event of any unforeseen cancellations, the day following the last scheduled session shall be kept as a reserve day. This day may also be utilized for the preview and review of participants’ assignments completed during the exercise. All participants are therefore advised to keep this day free and available.]
What the Course is Not About
This course does not teach traditional filmmaking using AI or
offer step-by-step tutorials for creating fully AI-generated
films. Instead, it introduces participants to a range of
generative AI tools and technologies, demonstrating their
potential applications across various stages of visual media
production—including pre-production, editing, sound, and audience
engagement.
The course is designed to foster awareness and inspire creative
exploration, rather than to replace or replicate conventional
filmmaking techniques.
It also does not endorse or promote any specific software or
platform. To demonstrate particular AI applications, the
instructor may use freely available or commercially licensed
tools. Participants are encouraged to explore alternative software
with comparable features based on their access and interest.
Finally, the course does not engage in debates about whether
AI-generated films will replace human-made films. It maintains a
neutral perspective, focusing instead on how generative AI can
support, complement, or challenge existing creative workflows.
Participants are encouraged to form their own opinions on this
evolving subject.
This course is not intended to mentor, create, or promote content
that may be considered unethical, controversial, or objectionable
in any form. FTII shall bear no responsibility or ownership for
any such content created by participants, whether intentionally or
inadvertently, during or after the course.
Content that aligns with broadly accepted ethical and creative
standards may be considered for further mentoring or co-creation,
to be conducted in virtual mode, subject to mutual agreement
between the participant and FTII, the Course Director, or Course
Instructors. This is entirely optional and not a mandatory aspect
of the course. Any mentoring activity beyond the course duration
is subject to the availability of the Course Director or Course
Instructors, as they may be engaged in other academic
responsibilities at FTII. Mentoring or co-creation should not be
considered a right, but rather seen as a valuable opportunity to
contribute to India’s digital transformation through responsible
and creative use of AI. Participants are expected to uphold
ethical standards and responsible creative practices. All content
generated using AI tools remains the sole responsibility of the
individual creator. It is strongly advised that participants
clearly acknowledge AI involvement in any outputs created as part
of, or inspired by, this course.
By registering for this course, participants are deemed to have
accepted and agreed to all course-related terms, guidelines, and
disclaimers. No separate undertaking will be signed in this
regard; registration itself constitutes formal agreement to the
stated conditions.
