3.1 Name
The Film and Television Institute of India, Pune.
3.2 Objective of the Institute
The main objective of Film and Television Institute of India is to
develop suitable patterns of teaching in all branches of film and
television, both at under-graduate and post-graduate levels, so as
to establish high standards of films and television education in
India.
3.3 Brief history of the Institute
The Film Institute of India was set-up by the Government of India in
1960 under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Following
the addition of Television Wing in 1974, the Institute was
re-designated as Film and Television Institute of India. The
Institute became a Society in October, 1974 under the Registration
of Societies’ Act, 1860. The Society consists of eminent
personalities connected with Film, Television, Communication,
Culture, Alumni of Institute and Ex-Officio Government Members. The
Institute is governed by a Governing Council, headed by a Chairman
who is an eminent person from the fields of cinema, television and
the arts. The academic policies and plans of the Institute are
formulated by the Academic Council. The matters involving finance
are controlled by the Standing Finance Committee.
3.4 Organizational Structure
The Society constituted by Ministry Of Information and Broadcasting
(MIB), Government Of India, runs the Institute through a Governing
Council (GC) in accordance with the Memorandum of Association.
President of the Society, nominated by the MIB, is also the Chairman
of FTII Governing Council.
GC constitutes Standing Finance Committee, Academic Council and
other committees to address the specific issues.
The Director is responsible for regular executive functions of the
Institute and is assisted by the Dean for academic matters and the
Registrar for administrative activities.

Recording and Sound Design)

Direction and Production Design)
6. Two year Post Graduate Diploma in Screen Acting
7. Two year Post Graduate Diploma in Screenwriting (Film,TV and Web
Series)
TV Wing:

With a history of more than forty years the alumni of the FTII enjoy
a special identity and respect from the film and media professionals
all over the country and world. The films of the alumni are known to
bag prestigious awards in both the feature length as well as the
short film category. For almost four decades several films made by
the FTII alumni have won accolades in National and International
Film Festivals.
1388 students who have passed out from the FTII are well placed in
the Film and Television industry all over the country and world. The
FTII has produced some of the most eminent film personalities, who
have brought great honour to the country, amongst the eminent past
students of the FTII, Pune, who have won National Film Award/UNESCO
Award are Smt. Shabana Azmi, Jaya Bachchan, Renu Saluja, Sarvashri
Adoor Gopalkrishnan, K.K. Mahajan, Shaji N. Karun, Ketan Mehta,
Kumar Shahani, Jahnu Barua, Girish Kasarvalli, Saeed Mirza, Mani
Kaul, Om Puri, Naseeruddin Shah and others. In the resent past films
like `Ashoka’, made by Shri Santosh Sivan and `Devdas’ made by Shri
Sanjay Leela Bhansali, both alumni of FTII are in the news for their
participation in the International Film Festivals.
FTII provides higher and professional education and technical
expertise in the art and technique of film making and television
production. In-service training is also provided to the officers of
all grades of Doordarshan. Since 1971 the Television Wing has been
conducting in-service training to the personnel of Doordarshan.
Short-Term courses are also conducted in specialized areas for the
Doordarshan staff, IIS Probationers etc. and so far over 6000
participants including the Annual Film Appreciation Course
participants have been trained.
FTII has attempted optimum utilization of the infrastructure and
facilities available. As an initiative to ensure full utilization of
the spare capacity, FTII has identified 21 short courses of varied
durations of 2 to 8 weeks, in addition to one and two year duration
courses in the areas of Screenplay Writing and Acting. These new
courses when fully implemented will help the Institute to generate
more revenue so as to make the Institute self-sustaining. Further
attempts are being made to increase the students’ strength in each
of the specializations.
FTII is today recognized as a premier institution in film and
television education, not only in India , but all over the world.
FTII is a member of CILECT (Centre International de Liaison des
Ecoles de Cinema et de Television), the apex body of all prominent
film and television schools of the world.

4.0 Functions
4.1 Powers and duties of FTII’s officers and employees
The Director is the Executive Officer of the Institute. The Director
shall be responsible for the proper administration of the Institute
and for the imparting of the instruction and maintenance of
discipline therein. The Director has the power to incur expenditure
in accordance with the procedure as may be laid by the Board from
time to time.
The Deans and Registrar shall assist the Director in academic and
administrative work and maintaining liaison with Institution’s
higher learning.
Registrar is the custodian of records, funds of Institute and such
other properties of the Institute.
Other officers and staff of the Institute assume powers,
responsibilities and duties as assigned to them from time to time by
the Director.
The Professors, Assistant Professors, Lecturers are taking classes
for students admitted every year. The services of all operational
and Maintenance Staff working in various departments are used for
smooth functioning of departments and to assist the Faculty/Students
for the training and conducting classes. Services of Administrative
Staff are used for maintaining the records and administrative work.
4.2 Procedure followed in the decision making process including
channels of supervision and accountability:
The Institute is a Society registered under the Societies
Registration Act, 1860 and an autonomous organization under the
Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Govt. of India. FTII
receives grant-in-aid from the Ministry on a net deficit basis for
conducting its activities and academic programmes. This deficit is
calculated on the basis of deduction of internal revenue received in
the Institute from the gross budgetary requirements. FTII Society
has 26 members out of which 9 members are ex officio members, 15
Governing Council members, including 5 ex-officio members. The
Standing Finance Committee has 4 members. The Director of FTII
functions as Member Secretary. The Governing Council as the apex
body is responsible for making all major policy decisions of the
Institute in consonance with its aims and objectives. The Governing
Council, in turn, appoints the Academic Council. The Academic
Council and the Standing Finance Committee are responsible for
advising it in policy matters related to academic affairs and
financial matters respectively. Approval of the Central Government
is sought for implementation of any decision taken by the Governing
Council if required. The tenure of the Governing Council is 3 years.
The Academic Council of FTII consists of members who are eminent in
the field of Film and Television and they review and update the
syllabus and other academic activities. The President of the Society
is also the Chairman of the Governing Council, the Academic Council
and the Standing Finance Committee.
4.3 Rules, regulations, instructions, manuals and records held by
it for discharge of functions:
All the employees of FTII are governed by FTII Service Bye laws.
However, wherever the Institute has not framed its own Rules such as
the pay scales, LTC, leave, and disciplinary rules, the Institute
follows The Central Civil Services Rules.
4.4 Statement of the categories of documents held by the
organization or under its control:
FTII is a teaching Institution for imparting training for film
making and television programmes production. Documents in connection
with enrolment of students and TV trainees, Recruitment of teaching
and non-teaching staff members, Reference Books/ Books pertaining to
various Rules, Administrative Office Orders / Decisions and
Guidelines as approved by Institutes’ Governing Council are some of
the documents held by it.
4.5 Particulars of any arrangement that exists for consultation
with, or representation by the members of the public in relation
to the formulation of its policy or implementation thereof
The FTII Society is constituted by Ministry of Information and
Broadcasting, Government of India for this purpose.
4.6 Statement of the boards, councils, committees and other bodies
consisting of two or more persons constituted as its part or for the
purpose of its advise, and so to whether meetings of those boards,
councils, committees and other bodies are open to the public, or the
minutes of such meetings are accessible for public
The minutes of the various meetings held by the Governing Council of
FTII are not relevant to the public, as the meetings organized by
the FTII Society is for the purpose of day to day supervision/advise
for smooth functioning of the Institute. However the Annual Report
of FTII is tabled in Parliament and is available to the Public after
its formal acceptance

4.8 Monthly remuneration received by each of its officers and
employees, including the system of compensation as provided in its
regulation
All the officers and employees on regular services of FTII are
governed by Central Govt. pay rules.

This does not apply to FTII as it has no subsidy programmes.

The Institute is having an Information and Facilitation Counter open

The Video Library and Book Library is available for Students,
Teachers and Staff members and members of the public with prior
permission during the office time of the FTII from 09:30 am to 6:00
pm on all the working days.
