The Editing Department at FTII, Pune has been a cornerstone of film education in India, shaping generations of highly skilled editors as well as several distinguished filmmakers. The department is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including high-end computer systems and thoughtfully designed editing cubicles that provide individual workstations for every student.
Students receive rigorous training on industry-standard Non-Linear Editing (NLE) software and gain hands-on experience with advanced online editing setups, ensuring comprehensive exposure to contemporary post-production workflows under the close guidance of the Editing faculty. The curriculum is further strengthened through master workshops conducted by leading industry professionals, enabling direct interaction and experiential learning
Beyond technical proficiency, the pedagogy places strong emphasis on cultivating a deep and nuanced understanding of cinematic arts and aesthetics. Students are trained to critically engage with narrative form, rhythm, temporality and visual-sound relationships, developing the intellectual and artistic sensitivity required of an editor. This conceptual grounding enables them to translate imagination, intention and abstract ideas into coherent audio-visual expressions, effectively realising creative vision on the editing timeline with clarity and purpose.
Over the decades, the department has produced numerous accomplished editors who have made significant contributions to Indian cinema through their creative and technical excellence. Programme Introduction
Master of Fine Arts in Cinema, specialization in Editing program offers an opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the art and craft of editing from fiction, non-fiction to feature length films. The programme is designed to equip students with a deep understanding of editing techniques, the history of editing, editing theory and the use of cutting-edge technology in post-production. Through hands-on experience, guided mentorship and master workshops by industry professionals, students will develop the skills needed to excel in various editing environments.
The MFA-Cinema in Editing programme at FTII spans six semesters.
- Semester I: Common foundation in all key filmmaking disciplines through theory and practice.
- Semester II: Collectively build foundational film language, technical editing skills, audio-visual and pre-visualization ability and culminate through collaborative participation in direction, editing, sound and cinematography.
- Semester III: Dialogue editing, genre-based editing and sound design, song and music video editing, basic online editing with color correction, advertisement and VFX workflows for editors and documentary editing with both theoretical and practical aspects.
- Semester IV: Pre-visualisation, a mise-en-scène project as editor, a non-fiction video essay and a documentary masterclass by an external expert with an exit option with PG Diploma in Cinema (Specialization in Editing).
- Semester V: On-set data management, post-production workflow, documentary projects as editor, video essays on fiction films, long-form narrative editing with deliverables and new media technology for promo creation.
- Semester VI: Focuses on industry exposure through a study tour, hands-on thesis film editing from start to final mastering and a research-based dissertation presented creatively through visual media.
Objectives of the Programme
The objective of the MFA-Cinema in Editing program is to develop
proficient and creative editors who can contribute meaningfully to
the evolving landscape of cinema and media nationally and
internationally. This programme is designed to provide an in-depth
understanding of the technical, artistic and theoretical aspects
of editing, empowering students to master the tools and techniques
used in the post-production process.
The students are guided towards effective storytelling techniques
with the help of evolving editing software which helps them
develop a strong creative vision and a critical approach to the
